Preventing Future Break-Ins

Trick me once, shame on you. Trick me twice...

A home that has been broken into is more than 4 times more likely to be broken into again. If you don't secure your home or your doors after a break-in, you are asking for a repeat offense.

What Usually Happens:

There are two calls that nearly all burglary victims make after they have had a break-in. The first is to a locksmith or carpenter to fix their door and install a better lock system. The second is to the alarm company. Why? Because they have been told that this is how to secure their home. An alarm and a better lock system are all that people have known about security for years - but they're not the only answer.

They already know what you have

While a standard alarm system is an added deterrent, a thief that has broken into your house already knows what you have. They also know that you are likely to replace the stolen materials with new ones. They will kick-in the same door (with the new lock) or may try another door, which is also not likely to be reinforced. They will be in and out in 5 minutes and your alarm company will call you at work to come home and fill out another police report. (Find out more shocking facts about "False Alarm" Security.)

What Should Happen:

If your door has been kicked-in, do something to stop the thief from coming back and doing it again. Reinforce your doors but make sure that you use a system that will reinforce your jamb, the lock and your hinges.

Make sure that you reinforce all of the doors on your house. Thieves know that most homeowners are lazy. If they kick the same door a few times and cannot get in, they are likely to try another door before going to another house.

While thieves are not likely to break a window to get in, you can secure your first-floor windows using some easy window protection tips and techniques to make it more difficult for them to get in this way.

Remember, if a thief gets into your home, the function of your alarm is to make sure that they spend as little time in the home as possible. If they have taken 15 minutes trying to kick-in your doors and breaking windows, they will know that their time is limited. Any loud noise-making device will help to speed them along.
